In World War II, Arthur Compton approached Frank Spedding seeking a solution to a big problem: Purifying uranium. It was a minor detail that proved to be a major sticking point for advancements in nuclear science, and after Harley Wilhelm and Frank Spedding developed a process of purifying the rare material, they continued to work on other materials science problems into the Atomic Age.
